In my opinion, the most important quality of the personal essay is being real with yourself. When you are real you are with your self, you are better able to connect with other people, which is what the personal essay is all about. Phillip Lopate says that “when he was telling about himself, he was talking, to some degree, about all of us.” What he means is that humans are essentially united through their experiences and charactestics. When you are describing a certain situation and telling the reader how you felt, chances are the reader has felt or are feeling the same way. I think this is a great way to think of humanity. It is a great way to connect with people and make everyone realize we are all in the same boat.
